Potentates Notes – Thomas W Binder
Zenobia has not stood still since our last stated meeting in June. We have been most everywhere in Northwest Ohio since then and, where we haven’t been, we will get to before Fall. Lots of events have kept our units and clubs visible in our communities spreading the word about Shriners. It’s a great feeling when we’re recognized and appreciated by our neighbors.
If you were not at the June stated meeting, you missed a treat. Our Past Potentates conducted the meeting with Illustrious Sir Oscar Oehmler serving at Potentate. Feedback from Nobles who attended and our Past Potentates was nothing but positive.
The Imperial Session was held this year in Daytona Beach, the same location as last year. Many important pieces of legislation were discussed and balloted on. Your Divan and other delegates discussed these proposed changes in depth at Zenobia prior to departing for Florida. I want to thank our Hospital Representatives for their attendance at that meeting and the honest discussions we had. The session in Daytona Beach was well attended by Zenobia and our interaction with the new Imperial Potentate Jim Cain was heartfelt. Imperial Sir Jim attended a membership meeting at Zenobia back in 2014 at the request of Illustrious Sir Keith Tuttle.
Our first Shriners Hospitals for Children Golf Outing was held August 5th at Heatherdowns Country Club. The festivity started on August 4th at Zenobia with a Cook Your Own Steak Dinner and musical entertainment. We are glad to say it was profitable and a fun time was had by all. Planning has begun for next year’s event to make it bigger and better.
Zenobia is busy preparing for the Great Lakes Shrine Association convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan September 19 – 23. The business meeting will be held on the 20th at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Rooms are still available. A parade will be held Saturday morning the 22nd. We ask that unit planning on parading please contact the office as we need to submit our unit information to GLSA ASAP. Zenobia will have a Hospitality Room at the Crown Plaza. Please stop by.
Sandusky Science Lodge and the City of Sandusky celebrated their 200th anniversary August 18th. Our Grand Master, Most Worshipful Eric R Schau, led area Masons in the parade. Zenobia had many parade units participate. If you ever had the opportunity to look at the street layout for downtown Sandusky, it was designed as a square and compass. The City Planner was a Mason.
Our Temple is participated in the Northwest Ohio National Tractor Pull in Bowling Green. We had a booth for the Sportsmen Extravaganza ticket sales and provided courtesy shuttle service for attendees from the parking lots to the main gate on a donation basis. Here is to hoping our involvement in this event will be profitable for Zenobia. Visibility at such large events can be nothing but positive. The National Tractor Pull Association was thrilled we stepped up.
