Potes Notes October 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

September was another great month to be a Shriner!  It was my pleasure to present to our members their 25, 50, and 60 year pins.  We had 24 recipients present for their 25-years pins and three for their 50th.  Congratulations to Barney Stickles who received his 60 year pin! What a great way to reopen the temple for our fall activities.

The summer parades have provided Zenobia with positive exposure in many communities.  This is a fantastic way to showcase the fun that Shriners have while also promoting our fraternity and philanthropy.  It is one of our best recruiting tools. So, a big ‘Thank You’ to those who parade for Zenobia!

Speaking of parades, what a super Zenobia turnout for the Clyde parade! There was a super Zenobia turn-out!  A good parade in the past became one of the best parades for Clyde. This was all because you were there for fun and to entertain.  Thank you for being “prepared to serve” and making a super showing!

As summer winds down, we are making plans for the winter.  The Gator Party in scheduled and ready for reservations.  I want to personally thank the Gator Party Committee chaired by Don and Shellie Falkenberg, with members Harold and Gloria Mucci, and Joe and Chris Vedra, all of whom have provided a terrific dinner and after-glo at Sahib Temple in Sarasota.  Because of their efforts, this party continues to grow in spirit and fellowship.  Thank you all! Make plans for the 2014 Gator Party on February 24th!

Check the calendar for the many events that will be happening.  Remember, on November 16th we will have our next “Old-Fashioned” Ceremonial.  Clubs and units should be getting plans together to have a ‘recruiting’ table, whether it is providing hand-outs, food or games to entice new members to join their group.  A meal will be served, time given for fellowship with new members and a unit parade will all occur besides the 1st and 2nd sections.  This will be the day of the Toledo Holiday Parade and each unit should plan on participating for the whole day.

Remember, a good way to recruit is to attend our RUSH events.  This year we have Rush Breakfast on October 12th and a Rush Night on November 8th (note date change).  These are great opportunities to bring Masons and non-Masons to hear about Blue Lodge, York and Scottish Rites, and the Shrine.  All non-Masons are free and ladies are welcome.  Make plans now to attend and bring prospective candidates.

Other events in October for ‘recruiting’ are Thirsty Thursday at Shell Shucker’s in Tiffin (Note location change).  Remember to have your lady attend the Ladies Style Show on Saturday, October 5th.  That evening is the Sportsmen’s Event sponsored by an outside group with proceeds to Zenobia. It is open to all men and women.  (See other Hadji articles for details.)  The regular Zenobia Family Breakfast is on Saturday, October 12th from 9-11 AM.  This will be the same date as the Rush Breakfast, whose program will be held in a separate room.  The Highlanders are holding their 50th year celebration the weekend of October 11-13th, at the Holiday Inn, Perrysburg.  The Pote’s Fall Foliage Trip departs on October 14th.  October 31st is the departure date for The Legion of Honor D.C. trip.

The Circus Committee is up and running.  Each club/unit needs to send a representative to the circus committee meetings on the third Wednesday of each month.  You can help best with the circus by knowing what is happening and is needed. A representative at each meeting will keep you informed and prepared to serve. Everyone contributes in a different way.  Be informed, be involved, be a part of the Zenobia Circus.

Potes Notes September 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

Wow!  Where did the summer of 2013 go!  It is hard to believe that September is here.   Now it is onto the fall!  But first, a brief recap of the many activities where members of Zenobia were involved since May.

During May, there was the GM One-Day Class, where Zenobia took in 40 new Nobles!  The month also included onions, the Pote’s Alaskan trip, and many Memorial Day parades.  June was full with Zenobia visibility at Plane Fun, Tabloids, golf outings and the start of parade season.   July and August continued with the Imperial at Indianapolis, unit/shrine club picnics, and a busy parade season.

Our many “Prepared to Serve” nobles have been out in the communities and demonstrating fun that can be enjoyed by our fraternity.   Many units and Shrine clubs hold events that bring the public to us.  Events such as golf outings, fish fries, fun runs or special event dinners are great ways to provide fun activities to prospective members.  Inviting people to these events has had positive results in recruiting.  It is also a super way to inform them about our great philanthropy.

Zenobia had a wonderful showing of units at Imperial.  Having so many units in the parade and the social gathering following the parade made this year’s Imperial Session fun and enjoyable.  Thank you to all the nobles who came to Indy and their ladies for supporting them.  As a member of Zenobia, you can be proud of the super showing at Imperial.

A thank you also goes out to the Fremont Shrine Club for hosting the after-glo following the Fremont parade.   Zenobia was well represented in the parade.  Plan on participating in the “Pote’s Parade” at 1 PM on Saturday, September 21 in Clyde, OH.  Lodges are also asked to parade contributing to a supportive statement for Masonry.  All are invited to the after-glo at the Clyde Eagles.

Remember, our Stated Meeting will be held the first Thursday, on September 5th.  Eligible members will be presented their 25, 50, and 60-year pins.  GLSA is the second weekend of September (9/12-14) in Mason, Ohio.  If you need to make reservations, contact our Recorder.  Also, consider treating your lady to a terrific Ladies Luncheon/Style Show on October 5th.  Even better, purchase a table and let her take family and friends to “Timeless Traditions”.  It is always an enjoyable day.

Our next Ceremonial is Saturday, November 16th.  Now is the time to get those Masons signed up to be Shriners, and/or recruit some new Masons.  Speak with your club or unit and get plans together to welcome new members.  An “old fashioned” ceremonial will again be held.  Be ready to participate in the “parade of units” prior to the second section.  Be “Prepared to Serve” and bring in new candidates.

Yours in the Faith,

Dennis Gable, Potentate

Potes Notes May 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

Wow! What a great time at a terrific Potentate’s Ball.  It was so enjoyable to spend an entertaining evening with Nobles, friends and family.  My Lady Joan and I give a BIG thank you to those who came to the Potentate’s Ball and made it such a great time.  Our sincerest appreciation goes out to Ill. Sir Carl Eakes and his Lady Clarice, along with their committee, for putting together a wonderful event.  Also, thanks to the Fremont Shrine Club for donations to the Ball and a generous donation to the Endowment Fund in my name.  What an outstanding gift!   Again, “Thank you” to all!

A successful circus is behind us and now the ONIONS are here.  Zenobia will be receiving more onions than in the past, so anyone can still sell and earn additional funds for your group. It has been impressive to know about units and clubs who are pushing themselves to sell more onions.  Your effort in supporting the sale of onions is really appreciated.  You are “Prepared to Serve”! Great job!

On May 11th, Zenobia has the opportunity to increase our membership.  The Grand Master’s One-Day Class will be held at the Stranahan, followed by the 4th Degree from Scottish Rite.  Our highlight of the day is the Zenobia Ceremonial where many new nobles will be joining our fraternity.  See other articles in this paper to learn about the schedule and unit/club displays at the One-Day Class.

What really is needed is YOU!  Your presence to support our brother Masons in their degree work is rewarding to you and each of them.  Feel the pride by being present for our Ceremonial.  New candidates want to see that the organization they just joined consists of members who participate and support each other.  Support the candidates and the Dramatic Cast.  Then, come to the June Stated Meeting, interact with the new members, and welcome them with a “second section”.  During the June meeting, Zenobia ladies are welcome to join the ladies of the new nobles at the French Quarter.  The ladies will dine, learn about Shrine, our philanthropy and ways to support and join in their new noble’s activities.

Remember, the easiest way to get a new member to a join your unit/club is to ASK THEM.  Join in Zenobia activities and be “Prepared to Serve” with the nobles of Zenobia for fun and fellowship.

Potes Notes April 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

It is so great to be a Shriner – helping kids in so many ways, and having lots of fun doing it!  Be proud and shine for all you do.

The circus was a hit!  The circus was fun and exciting, but the real thrill was watching the children laugh, smile and bounce in their seats.  This is the best family friendly event held in northwest Ohio.  Without the help of so many, this would not have been such a success. It is impossible to name all the nobles and their ladies who helped in so many ways to make this circus. So, THANK YOU TO ALL.

I do have to mention a few people who have spent a lot of time throughout the year promoting the circus.  Thanks to Bob Secoy, PP, who has been our Circus Director and keeps the day-to-day operations of the circus in check;  Fred Emmett for spending countless hours, not only promoting the circus, but selling tickets at Zenobia;  Keith Tuttle, CR, who was constantly working on ways to bring more people into the performances.  Also, for all the chairmen who handled the many ‘subcommittees’, the ad sellers, and to Teri for being the glue that held us all together, ‘thank you’.  To all the nobles of Zenobia I say “A job well done!”

Now our focus is on those ONIONS!  Give your support to Rev. Onion, turn in your orders, reserve your selling spot, and sell, Sell, SELL!

Nobles of units and shrine clubs, before you can parade in the name of Zenobia, be sure to get your list of parades into the temple for approval first.  Also, if your unit/shrine club is planning a meeting as a Divan visit, please inform the Potentate in writing.  This is needed at least two full months prior to the event in order to get it on the Divan schedule.  Please do not rely on “we always hold it then, so they know” since each year the Divan is under “new management” and some things are not retained.  The Divan would enjoy visiting your meeting/event, but need to know ahead.  It would be appreciated.

Last month it was announced that the Bobber Race was back on, and we were excited.  But now I must tell you that it is off.  This has happened because of a medical issue with the sponsor, but is still something they want to do for us.  Because of uncertainty, we will move this event to 2014, and add a new event in the Fall of 2013 as a Zenobia fundraiser.  Also, the Fire Fighters Recognition program in April, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for later in the year.

Our first ceremonial of 2013 will be held following the Grand Master’s Class on May 11th.  The Dramatic Cast will be conducting the 1st Section and we, as Nobles, need to be in the audience to support them and our NEW NOBLES.  Then, at the June Stated Meeting, we will be holding the 2nd section.  Also, the new Shriner ladies will be invited that night to a dinner and program about what we do and how they can be involved with their new Shriner. Plan your calendar to be present for both. Bring those Masons to Shrine events and get them on petitions.  They will be glad you did.  Also, the new Shriners’ ladies will be invited.

Hope to see you all at the Potentate’s Ball on April 13 and/or the breakfast on the 14th.  It would be great to have you present at these fun events.

Thank you again for all you do in being Prepared to Serve.

Potes Notes March 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

2013 is certainly off to a smooth running start.  January is behind us and February has come to a close.  In that short time, Zenobia has held many successful activities.  Thank you to all who have been attending these super events, whether one time or every time.  The success of Zenobia depends on having active members.  Many nobles attend and support their units and Shrine Clubs, and this is terrific.  Participation in Zenobia events is an exciting way to serve your Temple.  It is also a terrific way to expand your social life with people that share the same values and interests.  You are charged to find one new temple event that you have not participated in during the last 3 years and give it a try.  You will be glad you did.

A special thank you goes out to the ladies who enjoyed dinner and were present for dessert following the February Stated meeting.  Your attendance was greatly appreciated by the nobles.  Many Zenobia activities include the ladies. It will be nice to see each of you at other Zenobia events.

Throughout the Hadji are articles about the many upcoming events at Zenobia.  Take the time to read about these events and schedule Shrine activities in your calendar. These will help you prepare to serve your Temple through participation.

March is an exciting month with our BIG fundraiser- THE CIRCUS!  Do everything you can to make it a great success.  Under the direction of Circus Director Ill. Sir Bob Secoy, P.P., and the many members of the circus committee, the circus WILL be another great event.  Many improvements have been made to the circus in order to draw in more attendees.  Get your tickets now and bring the family for a fun day at the Shrine Circus!

“Prepared to Serve” means stepping up to assist, even when not asked.  It pleases me to report that a few determined nobles have stepped up and taken on the challenge of keeping the Bobber Race going.  Now it is up to each noble to serve by providing quality items for the auction, volunteering to assist with the fundraiser and SELLING TICKETS.

Zenobia continues to move in the right direction. We are good and getting better. Your participation and service will boost us towards being great.  It is now up to you.  Are you Prepared to Serve?

Dennis Gable, Potentate

P.S. On a personal note, Joan and I say ‘Thank You’ to all of you who have thought of us during this time of loss of Joan’s dad, Cal Smith, a 50 year member of Zenobia. Cal is the reason I became a Mason.  Your prayers, calls and attendance at the memorial service meant a great deal to us and Joan’s mother and family.  The Masonic family has been a pillar of strength during this time.  We are blessed.

Potes Notes February 2013 – Illustrious Sir Gable

Nobles,

I am honored to serve as your Potentate for 2013.  The great attendance at installation was an indication of your support for the year, and is greatly appreciated.  We have many activities and functions at Zenobia which will continue to make us a strong temple.  Thank you for all you do for our great fraternity.

The theme this year is “Prepared to Serve”.  There are innumerable ways in which one can serve.  Service provides an individual with great satisfaction and a positive reflection on who we are as Shriners.   As each of us considers methods of service, remember to promote Masonry and Shrinedom, build growth in our membership, recruit patients and support our hospitals, increase our visibility, and most importantly provide service to your God, family and community.  Each one of us should serve by doing our part in helping Zenobia grow.  Growth means increasing and retaining our membership, and several activities will assist in getting this done. It also encourages each of us to learn more about the Shrine through participation, and then involving others in our fun adventures.

Your participation at the Orientation and Pote’s Reception reflect the beginning of a terrific year for Zenobia. Thank you to the A-Team and Fremont Shrine Club for a wonderful party.  It was an exemplary service to Zenobia.  The wonderful fellowship and support that was demonstrated will hopefully encourage you to be an active Shriner. Throughout the year there will be many more events for nobles and their ladies to enjoy.  Please participate in at least one more event than you did last year, and bring someone with you.  If you were helpful in bringing in a new noble in the past five years, is he attending any of our events?  If not, contact him and bring him and his lady to an event, get them to help at a fundraiser, or visit a unit/shrine club.  Often, it only takes an invitation to get someone involved, so ask.

The year is certainly off and rolling.  Besides the strong showing at the installation, orientation and reception, we had a truly wonderful night at the Wild Game Feed.  Gary Brown and his helpers provided an outstanding evening of great food, fun, action and an opportunity to return home with some wonderful ‘prizes’.  Thank you, Gary. This was a super event!

More activities lie ahead.  The Super Bowl is more enjoyable to watch with friends. So, bring your friends to Millbury and watch the game with the Directors Staff on February 3rd (Tickets at the door).  Our next Rush Night is Friday, February 8th.  These events have been quite successful for recruiting.  If you have not been there, plan on attending one, and bring a potential candidate.  All non-Masons are free and nobles enjoy a great steak dinner for only $10!  Zenobia Breakfast will be on Saturday, February 9th.  See Norm Burrow for advance purchase of tickets for $5 or $6 at the door.  Bring the family, friends or neighbors for a good meal and fellowship.  The February Stated Meeting is on Valentine’s Day.  ALL Zenobia LADIES are invited to attend dinner together at the Maumee Elks. Then join the Nobles for dessert at 9 PM at Zenobia.  This is a chance for the ladies to socialize while the men have their meeting. Ladies, call Teri at Zenobia by February 7th to reserve a place.

‘Thank You’ goes out to anyone who has already helped Zenobia get off to such a great start this year.  Your service will make this year the best.

Prepared to Serve,

Dennis Gable, Potentate

Zenobia Shriners

Note:

What better way to help Zenobia than to sell circus tickets at Zenobia Circus Office?  Nobles and ladies are encouraged to volunteer.  Training is provided.  Call to set up a time. The days you work will be on YOUR schedule.  From now until the circus, we need volunteers for any day of the week. One evening and Saturday will also be open. There are many opportunities which will fit into your schedule.

Potes Notes 2012 (End of Year) – Illustrious Sir Hamons

Dear Nobles,

This is my last Hadji article/BLOG Post as Potentate and as they say the year sure went fast.

I wanted to start by thanking each of you the Nobles of Zenobia Shriners who do what you can when you can to support and enjoy your fraternity.  The events you make and the time you give is what makes this fraternity work.  Our fraternity is here for each of us and when we come together for some fun and fellowship it is such a wonderful place to be surrounded by your Masonic Brothers in harmony and joined as Shriners supporting our causes and our philanthropy.

We have accomplished a lot this past year and I am fortunate to have been involved as this fraternity has introduced me personally to some really great men who are great givers, great leaders, great workers, great motivators, great thinkers, great fund raisers, great philanthropists and most of all great friends.

At our entrance into this order we are told to live our life in ways that are good examples to others.  We are taught that if we adhere to our Masonic teachings, principals and morals that it is impossible to error or to fail as a just and upright man amongst others.

I must say that I have personally witnessed the best possible behavior and I have witnessed the greatest examples of men who take Freemasonry and the Shriners Creed to heart and live it and demonstrate it every day.  I believe it is this standardized belief system that gives us our strength both individually and most certainly when we form our many groups and do things together in our fraternity united as like-minded men.

It is a new day in our Lodges and our Shrine and never before has our work as Masons and Shriners been more needed.  We must lead so others will follow, we must serve so others will want to help, we must set examples so others know how to act, we must provide for others as many are in need, and most of all when we do these things we build upon each of ourselves individually making us better men.  I believe this is the ultimate attraction for why others will want to join in our fraternal efforts it is in seeing what we do, how we do it, the men we have that are willing do it and the grace we give to others because of our work.

Let us all be reminded of our Shriners Creed:

Shriners believe in God and that He created man to serve His purposes, among which is service to others in His name.

We believe that care for the less fortunate, especially children who suffer from burns and crippling diseases, is our institutional calling.

We are patriots, each willing to serve his country with fidelity and courage. We cherish independence under law and freedom with responsibility.

We honor family. We respect our parents, wives and children. We should instill in our children the tenets of this creed, and the heritage from which it emanates.

As individuals we pledge ourselves to integrity, virtue and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our relations will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other.

As brothers we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed, so that we and our communities will be the better because of our fraternity and its principles.

As Shriners we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospitals to be the world’s greatest philanthropy, and we covenant with each other to support its “temples of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.

As we conclude our year in Masonry and in our Shrine we must not end without giving thanks go all those that help us and support us as well as our members who go above and beyond the call always ready to help and to serve.  A special thanks to our Brothers, Nobles and all the wives, families and friends who help and support us in our efforts.

Finally Nobles, Remember there is work upon the trestle board and let us not be idle.  Let us be involved in our Blue Lodges, Clubs and Units and to enjoy the benefits of your Lodge and all our fraternity has to offer.

Our Attitude for Altitude campaign is coming to a close and we are about to land for this year has been a wonderful Journey and just one more year of Shriners Journey into the Future.  I think we all have a lot to be Thankful for.

Potes Notes December 2012 – Illustrious Sir Hamons

Dear Nobles,

Thanks to all who came out for Thirsty Thursday at Dales in Maumee.  We had a great crowd and a good time was had by all.

The energy and attendance at the Stated meeting in November was fantastic.  Thanks for coming out and for helping us to run our fraternity and our health care system.  We passed the bylaw update to Shriners International Iowa Corporation bylaws, we received donations of a lot of money to our health care system Shriners Hospitals for Children and we voted on many new Nobles who are interested in the great work we do and the fun we have as Shriners and they too want to be a part of us.

The GRAND MASTER’s theme this year is TOGETHER WE CAN!

November is always such a rewarding month in our fraternity.  Our friends at Lodge get elected and installed to new offices. We get to see another Scottish Rite Reunion and our friends working together to portray degrees.  The York Rite is back in full swing as well as Allied Masonic Degree Groups, Council, Commandary and of course the Shriners.  The more we work together the more we can and accomplish – Together we can.

Zenobia Ceremonial and parade this past Saturday November 17th was simply fantastic in every way.  We had perfect fall like weather near 50 degrees and no wind or precipitation of any kind.  I know personally that this is not always the case.

The Toledo Holiday Parade was extremely well attended by Shriners and the spectators lined the streets.  I am sure that a great time was had by all.  Special thanks to all the Shriner Clubs and Units that came out in full force to make it special.

What made the parade really nice this year were the 10 new Shriners riding together on the Directors Staff Truck.  That was the greatest site of the day.  Especially when everyone kept yelling up to them WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE SILLY HATS???

I want to personally welcome all our new Shriners to the world greatest Fraternity and Philanthropy.  I would also like to thank each and every Noble who came out to be a part and to do all the work that needed to be done to make the Old Fashioned Ceremonial such a wonderful success for all of us and especially for our new Nobles.

The Grand Master will be at Zenobia Temple on Friday November 30th as we honor him and his new Lodge Masters as they begin working in the New Year under the Grand Masters theme of Together We Can!  This is private by invitation event to all current Lodge Masters and their Ladies in the entire Zenobia jurisdiction.  The Zenobia Divan will be hosting, cooking, serving and cleaning up after this special catered Steak Dinner to honor hour guests.  Because at Zenobia we believe “TOGETHER WE CAN!”

Because at Zenobia we believe “TOGETHER WE CAN!” and for this reason we are asking all our brothers to support our Wild Game Dinner to support Membership initiatives for Blue Lodge Masonry.  The funds for this event pay for RUSH Nights and other programs that need financial support.  Donate items and come to the Blue Lodge Wild Game Dinner on January 25th see advertisement in this Masonic Bulletin and the Zenobia Hadji.

Potes Notes – November 2012 – Illustrious Sir Hamons

Dear Nobles,

What a great month we are having at Zenobia.  We started the month off with Thirsty Thursday at the Ottawa Tavern on October 4th with a real nice turnout of Nobles and Ladies and a good time was had by all.

Noble Caid McKinley has been busy with his new duties as 2nd Ceremonial Master.  He brought in Bubba’s BBQ Ribs from Avon Lake and served the divan and excellent pre-divan meeting dinner on October 3rd.  He later received some special recognition from the Grand Master for his work in Masonry.  See this story elsewhere in this edition of the Hadji.  We are all very proud of him.  Nice Job Caid!

The Zenobia Arab Patrol invited me to attend their Old Timers and Widows night at the Temple on Friday, October 5th.  They are known for their steak dinners and WOW did they have a great one.  Thanks for all you guys do.

The Zenobia Divan Ladies hosted a Ladies Style show on October 6th at the Pinnacle.  Lady Susan Schnapp led an awesome event this year and from what I could see all the ladies that came had a wonderful time.  The Styles from Chico’s were very nice.  Thanks Susan and all the Divan Ladies for running such a wonderful event.  Special Thanks to all the ladies who worked as models.

Next I was off to Tampa, Florida on Tuesday October 9th through the 14th to attend the 26th Annual Shriners International Membership Conference.  The conference was well attended by 122 Temples and over 220 Nobles from all over the world.   Noble Bob Secoy Past Potentate and Noble Joe Rezbanyay attended the seminar with me from Zenobia.  Noble Bob Secoy has been appointed by the Imperial Potentate for the last two years to serve as a Membership Development Specialist.  Bob is overseeing the 6 Shrine Temples in Ohio.  Noble Joe attended on behalf of the Zenobia Membership Committee of which I have recently asked him to serve on.  All three of us have come home with many good ideas we hope to help implement over time to continue to improve membership at Zenobia.

The overarching emphasis at this year’s membership conference was on creating a sense of urgency within our Temple to get all hands on deck as it pertains to Membership.  This year at Zenobia we have worked hard to continue to develop our Membership Strategy and we are seeing our efforts pay off.  Thirsty Thursdays and RUSH Nights have worked well at getting our Membership involved in the Membership process.  We need your help to reach out to your friends who are already members and invite them to attend a Zenobia event with you as retaining the members we have now and getting them active and involved is very important.   Reach out to someone you know who used to be a member and invite them back we would love to help you restore some old friends.  Our next Ceremonial is on Saturday November 17th and we have a fun day planned for everyone who comes out.  We will be making some new Shriners that day and attending the Toledo Holiday Parade plus tailgate parties at the Temple and some great times are in store.  See full advertisement elsewhere in this Hadji.  Please join us on this day as this will be a most important day at Zenobia and who do you know that would make a great member.  Remember that Membership is on sale for $100.00 the rest of this year.  Our beashrinernow.com member marketing campaign continues to attract men to our fraternity.  The number one comment we get is that I want to be like my Grandfather.  The most common age of a prospect is 32 years of age.

Remember: Shriners Village Nobles as it is your home for finding all the information available to you as a Shriner.  Http://www.shrinersvillage.com.  Click Register and set up your own personal account.

This year we have been focused on the BIG 6 Strategies and Shriners Journey to the future.  The Six Strategies are Membership, Communication, Leadership, Temple Management, Temple Activities and Philanthropy.  Your Divan is committed to these six strategies and will be working at a Divan Strategic Planning Session on October 20th and 21st to develop six move toward goals within each of the Big 6 Strategic Planning areas.   We believe that our best days are still ahead and we will continue to modernize our Temple and it’s offering to make sure it is attractive and of interest to the next generations of men who we need to join us and help us with our mission. http://big6.shrinersvillage.com Click on the RED Dots and listen to the BIG 6 and Shriners Journey to the Future.

Potes Notes – October 2012 – Illustrious Sir Hamons

Dear Nobles,

What a great time we recently had when several Divan members and I visited the Firelands Steak Dinner at Herm McCreary’s house.  They had a great turnout and we had fun telling a few jokes and eating some great steaks.  We all shared thoughts on what we could do to improve Membership within the Shrine and a good time was had by all.  I want to say a special Thanks to Herm McCreary for his contributions to Zenobia Shriners.  He has been very active and helpful to all.  Thank You Hermie we appreciate all you have done and I personally appreciate all your support over the years.

The Blue Lodge Perch Fishing trip was cancelled at the last minute because of Gail force winds on Lake Erie but we all decided to go in force to Diane’s Deli in Port Clinton for a wonderful breakfast.  Assistant Rabban Tuttle ordered the Hummel Cakes and was in Hummel Heaven.  I didn’t even know they served such a thing but he sure did.  Several of us then went back to my Dad’s house on Catawba Island for a nice walk in Gail Force Winds along the lake and sometime standing in Dads boat talking about all the fish we would have caught.

Next many of us were off to the Great Lakes Shrine Association meeting in Mason, OH at the Great Wolf Lodge at Kings Island.  Zenobia had a nice turnout of Divan members and Nobles.  We are all proud of our own Noble Ike Issacson who is in the Great Lakes Line and will be President in two years.  Noble  CJ Apel of the Zenobia Motorcycle Escorts was there to run the timing for the Great Lakes Motor Corp Competitions and he paraded with us on Saturday.  He is a real asset to the GLMAC organization and will be very helpful as Zenobia will be hosting the GLSA meeting in Perrysburg in 2015 under the leadership of Noble Ike Issacson.

Norm Kurtz our new Pilgrimage Chairman this year did an outstanding job with coordinating our lodging and hospitality and a wonderful time was had by all.  I owe a special thanks to the devilish crew who decided to decorate my room and trick it out just right for me as a poor un-suspecting Potentate.  The 57 Blow UP Airplanes in my room sure made it cozy on Friday night when I returned.   I am not sure who came up with the idea to put Saran wrap over my toilet but that was very clever and quite effective… wet feet YIKES!  I also enjoyed the special wall paper job that was very nice…  The Divan Ladies are a resourceful bunch of Ladies.

Special Thanks to the Zenobia Arab Patrol for attending GLSA and for marching in the Competition.  You guys looked great and always perform well.  You make Zenobia proud of all you do.  Good Work Guys!

The Dendarah Ladies are hosting the Great Lakes Unit Meet GLUM in Perrysburg later this month.  They are sure a hard working bunch of Lady Shriners.  We appreciate all the support they give to Zenobia and especially to Shriners Hospitals for Children.  Several of us from the Divan will be attending their GLUM Banquet at the end of September.

Nobles we have the next Thirsty Thursday coming up on October 4th at the Ottawa Tavern.  Please come out and enjoy some fellowship.  Ladies and non-masonic friends are all invited.  No cost except for your own food or drinks.

This year I have been focused on the BIG 6 Strategies and Shriners Journey to the future.  The Six Strategies are Membership, Communication, Leadership, Temple Management, Temple Activities and Philanthropy.

Big 6 – Strategy 6 is Philanthropy and is the topic I wanted to write about this month.  Zenobia is very active at raising money for the World’s Greatest Philanthropy Shriners Hospitals for Children.  This Strategy is perhaps the most loved of all the 6 we are focused on and is singularly responsible for attracting many men to become Shriners.    Our involvement at Zenobia is broad and let’s list a few ways that we get involved to help kids get care at our hospitals.  First we hold Hospital Mini-Clinics each year and these clinics seek to find kids from all over Northwest Ohio who could use help at one of our Hospitals.  Zenobia supports 4 hospitals including Erie, Chicago, Cincinnati and Lexington.  Our Zenobia Road Runners provide free transportation for kids and their families back and forth to our hospitals as often as needed.  Zenobia Shriners volunteer to be appointed Hospital Board Members and drive themselves to and from many meetings at each of the respective hospitals giving time, talent and means to run our hospitals as representative of Zenobia.  Many of our Clubs and Units hold fund raisers every year that benefit our hospitals.  We all help support our Tabloid Sale and many of you are now supporting our Hospital Plaque Sales to raise funds annually for our hospitals.  One of the most rewarding experiences for any Shriners is meeting a Shriners Patient who was cared for and helped by our Great Fraternity…  Shriners run Shriners Hospitals for Children and because of each of you we have the greatest Philanthropy in the World – Shriners Hospitals for Children.  Thanks for all you do Shriners because when we are united by a common cause we can accomplish great things.

Nobles we have many great events in the near future.  Take a look at the calendar in this Hadji and join us you will be glad you did.

Finally Nobles, Remember it is time to get back to Blue Lodge and enjoy the benefits of your Lodge and our fraternity.

Our Attitude for Altitude campaign is well underway and I have a FIRST CLASS ticket for you.  I promise it will be a great ride so please get on board, sit down, buckle up and hang on.

Flight Crew – PREPARE FOR TAKEOFF…

Fraternally Yours,

Jeffery W. Hamons, Illustrious Potentate, Zenobia Shriners
